After leaving Canggu, Bali, we took off from our lovely stay at JungleRoom and travelled to Eastern Bali, all the way to Selat. Selat is close to Mt. Agung, one of the active volcanoes in Bali. We had booked a two night stay at Hideout Bali, an eco-friendly bamboo home built in a secluded location right in the jungle. Getting to Hideout Bali was not easy, so I’ve come up with a Quick Guide and Airbnb review about Hideout!
Best way to get to Hideout Bali
In the registration page, Hideout staff said since the place is quite secluded and a bit hard to find, they recommend using their own drivers. We contacted them a week before to inquire about the price and they said, 500,000Rp. This is considered quite expensive because a 10hr driver in Bali costs 550,000Rp. They were asking for 500,000Rp for a hotel transfer from Canggu to Bali. The whole trip would’ve taken 1.5hrs-2hrs depending on traffic. This was too expensive for us so we opted for a 10hr driver in Bali. We would visit some tourist attractions along the way and be dropped off at Hideout at the end of our trip. If you’re looking for a Bali driver, I can recommend two,
Booking Hideout Bali
This airbnb hideout has gotten so much coverage and is so popular very early advance booking is needed. I stayed in October and I made the booking way back in May – and I was already restricted to a set of dates. I had to adjust my itinerary to fit the schedule. Sad thing was, after I made the booking on airbnb, two new Hideout airbnbs were introduced on their Instagram and I couldn’t book it because I already booked mine!
The Hideout Bali airbnb I stayed In
I stayed in the original airbnb, I believe it was one of the first that was built. The name is directly “Hideout”, whereas the other newer ones are called Hideout Beehive, Hideout Horizon etc. Hideout is located right beside a fast flowing river (with plenty of rocks, don’t jump!) and contains two floors, with the top level as the master bedroom. The ground floor included a sofa with table, two hammocks, one kitchen and an open toilet and shower. The overall layout of the place was great, we had no problems. This does not come with a pool, but if you are adventurous, you can climb down to the river pool (this part is deep) and just walk up the river. The river is very shallow, probably just up to your ankles.
Mosquitoes & Bugs
If you plan to venture out here, expect to see bugs crawling around! This is perfectly normal. We experienced, ants (quite big ones) that came out in the morning looking for food- they usually leave around the evening at 5 back to their burrows. They are perfectly harmless. An occasional spider may appear, none appeared in our house, but one did appear in the outdoor shower and they weaved a massive web beside the sink. Mosquitoes come out mostly when it gets dark, same with other flying bugs. I would recommed NOT turning on the light in the living room right above the sofa table as this will attract a lot of flying bugs at night. We turned on the lights in the kitchen and kept the living room lights off and this was much better.
Food- What to eat?
Hideout offers in-room dining all very reasonably priced. We ate all our meals in Hideout and every dish was delicious. I highly recommend their fried noodles and fried rice. Each Hideout comes with an old-fashioned Nokia cellphone with two numbers, Dining & Driver. Call to order food, call to ask them to clean up too. If you would like to go out to a nearby shop to eat, sorry there aren’t too many warungs around. I did try to find one, either it was closed (at random hours) or it was poorly reviewed.
Getting Around
Hideout provides scooters to use free of charge and they were very well maintained. The shop is just a 5 minute scooter drive away, probably a 30 minute walk if you decide to walk. On the map there was a place where Hideout marked ‘explore’ this was intriguing and we decided to follow that path. It goes off the map but it did not disappoint! We came across beautiful scenic views of Mt. Agung in the distance and rice paddies in front of us.
