Recommended Airbnb in Shenzhen for photos!

shenzhen airbnb

I came to a realization that my latest posts mostly dealt with food, see “Top Instagrammable Cafes in Hong Kong” and “Top 7 Instagrammable Cafes in Taipei”. So today, I decided to step away from all the food posts for a while, and focus on some nice places & photo-worthy homes/hotels to live in different cities. In this post, I will be sharing an Airbnb review of a place I stayed in Shenzhen I thought was quite good and I would recommend, Kaws Inn.

Everyone knows how much I hate Shenzhen after the 10+ business trips I made in 2017. I hated everything about it — the rude people, the terrible hotel I stayed at, the nerve-wrecking traffic, how you couldn’t just eat from “any” restaurant because it was unclean.

Last weekend my husband wanted to go to Shenzhen to try out the claw machines (more on that later) so we decided to make a weekend trip. Macau is so boring I had no choice. I didn’t do any research because there was nothing I wanted to see, except to eat the famous coconut chicken hotpot 椰子雞 and drink heytea. So I thought, if I am making a trip to Shenzhen, I might as well take some Insta-worthy photos there to share with my followers, this was when I found Kaws Inn.

Kaws Inn is run by Miller, who can speak in Chinese and English (if you decide to message him on airbnb). He owns some properties around Shenzhen and designed a different theme for each one. I wasn’t a fan of the other themes, but I did like the black and white theme for Kaws Inn. Yes, as the name implies, this is a Kaws- themed room. I am NOT a fan of Kaws (sorry for those Kaws lovers), and I didn’t choose this room becasue of Kaws. I merely loved the natural lighting for the house.

The House

The house contains one bedroom, one living room, one washroom, one kitchen and an outdoor patio (for the washing machine and where you can dry your clothes). The house is quite small, but cozy. There is enough room to move around in, and was sufficient if you are out all day. The washroom was the smallest, you shower directly in any extra space you can find between the toilet and the sink. Small, but manageable. The living room is nicely decorated with lights that reflect off the walls, there are some fake plants lying around that make each corner Instagram-worthy. There is a big sofa where around 5 people can sit. The best part was the projector with Chinese movies on demand we were able to access and watch! The sound system was not so great, but this is just an airbnb! The room included a double bed, with a table off to the side with a mirror in front of you (vanity mirror?). I never used the kitchen or the patio, so I can’t comment on those. Chinese food is relatively cheap so I never had to cook at home.

The Location

The house is located just a short 3 minutes walk from the nearest exit from the subway station. When you first arrive, you may find it difficult to find the place, but the owner provides picture by picture instructions on how to find the place. The nearest subway station is Jiantian (景田站) which is only 2 stops away from Futian station (福田站) where you can take the High Speed Rail to West Kowloon in Hong Kong. Futian district is a very popular district and most of the places I visited were all within this vicinity.

The Cleanliness

When I arrived, the room was very clean and I did not see any garbage around. However, I have to admit, during my stay, I did come across two cockroaches. This is very normal in Asia, and I think it was due to the unthrown garbage (consisting of finished bubble tea) was in our room for 2 days. That may have attracted cockroaches. So the general rule in Asia is- always throw away your garbage everyday to avoid any visits to your home. I also found that there were some dust flying around when I attempted to close/open the curtains for the photos. Because of that, I didn’t really want to sit on the windowsill, even though it looked quite comfortable. But overall, I would still give it 8/10.
